why bowen?
Find your place with us
When you are deeply involved with your child's school experience, you form lasting connections. One of the oldest continuously operating cooperative preschools in the country, Bowen is a place where all have a chance to learn and grow. Parents and younger siblings meet for play and coffee in the common area, and parent discussion groups celebrate the joys and challenges of raising preschoolers. These informal moments often result in friendships that last a lifetime.

But Bowen really shines in the classroom. A child-centered, play-based, nut-free school, our children continue their social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development in a creative, safe, and exciting environment. Children are allowed to grow and develop at their own rates, and each day abounds with new materials and discoveries. Our activities encourage children’s independence, confidence, and self-expression. Classrooms feel focused and purposeful, respectful and safe, calm and yet stimulating: full of art, color, song, movement, and joy.
What's a Co-op?
Being part of a parent cooperative is incredibly rewarding. At Bowen, parents help the school run smoothly, from assisting occasionally in the classroom to helping with administrative tasks or serving on the board.
Co-ops are often more affordable compared to other preschools, even though the quality of teaching is exceptional. In return, each family contributes their time, energy and talents to the life of the school, resulting in a richer, more meaningful and connected experience.

our facility
Each program has its own bathroom and classroom with a discovery table, art easels, blocks, and dramatic play area with toys, puzzles, manipulatives, books and other resources that teachers draw from to provide the children with a stimulating and engaging environment.
We also have a common play area and a large, carpeted multi-purpose room where children take part in music and creative movement. A full kitchen allows "parent helpers" to prepare the day's snack.
Outside is a shady playground where, weather permitting, children are given the opportunity to play in the fresh air each and every school day.
"The Pre-K Program was a lifesaver. With a late September birthday, my daughter couldn't attend kindergarten. Bowen didn't just give her a place to be, it built her academic foundation for life."
